Yeo Hoe Koon is a Singaporean artist and NAFA alumnus who has devoted more than seven decades to a lifelong painting practice. Working across oil, acrylic, and Chinese ink, Yeo has developed a distinctive artistic language shaped by both Eastern and Western traditions. Following the exhibition Illumination: Paintings by Yeo Hoe Koon in 2022, the artist gifted 3 of his paintings, Vitality, Blue Tango and Colours in Bloom to NAFA. These works contribute to NAFA’s collection, documenting artistic practices by alumni who have influenced the visual arts landscape in Singapore.
Characteristic of Yeo's later practice, Colours in Bloom reflects his ability to move fluidly between Western abstraction and the expressive traditions of Chinese ink painting, adapting each medium to achieve distinct visual effects. Executed with the expressive qualities unique to ink, the composition balances the structural presence of bold brushwork with the translucency of layered washes. Rather than suggesting human movement, the work evokes the vitality of nature through an interplay of colour, texture, and rhythm.
