Workshops and Events > Past Exhibitions Artistic Odyssey: Poon Lian’s Oil and Ink Paintings

Venue: Lim Hak Tai Gallery
Date Of Event: 29 July - 3 August 2007

A hardworking and self-critical artist, Poon Lian says that he finally mustered the courage to mount his first solo exhibition in his 30 years of practice. Artistic Odyssey – Poon Lian’s Oil and Ink Paintings exhibition was his dream come true, the opening officiated by NAFA Chairman Professor Cham Tao Soon on 28 July at Gallery, featured a modest assemblage of works that stood testament to his vision in finding breakthrough in one’s art – change and adaptation that transcends medium and mindset. The event also commemorated the artist’s donation of his work, ‘The Shore in Evening’ to the Academy - a tropical landscape of the old Pulau Brani, with a small fishing village nestled at the foot of the hill amidst the greenery presented in Chinese ink brushwork. As Bridget Tracy Tan, Director of Institute of Southeast Asian Arts and Art Galleries, suggests in her essay Ports of Call – discovering Nanyang in Poon Lian’s paintings, “Like many of Poon Lian’s works, this landscape is more than its genre. It is a poetic tribute to a mood, an idea, a time and a place”.
