Fan Chang Tien 范昌乾 (1907-1987)
Fan Chang Tien 范昌乾 (1907-1987) was a prominent and accomplished Chinese artist who contributed to developing art scene in Singapore from mid 1950s as an artist and teacher. Fan hails from the Shanghai School and studied art under haipai 海派 masters such as Wang Geyi and Wang Yiting. He arrived in Singapore in 1956 and eventually settled down, spending the later half of his life teaching and painting. As an artist, Fan emphasised the literati aspects of scholarly pursuits and dedicated himself in teaching the younger generation. He excelled in calligraphy, poetry and painting and his works often combined these elements in artistic expression and personal interpretation.
