Fan Chang Tien 范昌乾 (1907-1987)

Fan Chang Tien is widely recognised as one of the foremost pioneer artists of Chinese ink painting in Singapore and a vital transmitter of the Shanghai School tradition in Southeast Asia. Born in Guangdong, China, he received his formal training at the Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai, graduating in 1928, before continuing his studies at Changming Art College under haipai (海派) masters including Wang Yiting, Wang Geyi, and Pan Tianshou; direct inheritors of Wu Changshuo's legacy of expressive, scholar-centred brushwork. A practitioner equally accomplished in painting, calligraphy, poetry, and seal carving, Fan worked primarily in the freehand tradition and was especially celebrated for his depictions of orchids, bamboo, birds, and fish, subjects rendered with fluid spontaneity and quiet lyrical authority. His landscapes, though less prolific, were equally admired for their masterful modulation of ink and their sense of atmosphere achieved in a single, unbroken breath.

Fan settled in Singapore in 1956, teaching at Chung Cheng High School and Whampoa Secondary School before retiring in 1968, and which he continued to teach from his home studio, ‘The Pure Orchid Studio’(素兰室) in Balestier Road. Over his 31 years in Singapore, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to both his art and his students, transmitting the Shanghai School's ink tradition and the broader ideals of Chinese literati culture to the local community. Among his students are Cultural Medallion recipient Chua Ek Kay and painter Lim Kay Hiong, both of whom became significant figures in Singapore's art history.
