Low Puay Hua 刘培和 (1945 -)

Born in Singapore in 1945, Low Puay Hua is regarded as one of the country’s foremost watercolourists and painters. His artistic practice has produced a vibrant and enduring chronicle of Singapore’s urban life and landscapes. After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, he worked in advertising and publishing, illustrating textbooks for Far Eastern Publishers and the Educational Publications Bureau before dedicating himself fully to his art. This early foundation in visual communication, shaped by close observation of everyday life, would prove formative to the sensitivity and nuance that define his paintings.

Low works across watercolour, oil and Chinese ink, bringing to each medium a keen attentiveness to place and atmosphere. He is especially celebrated for his watercolours of the Singapore River, Chinatown, and the city's bustling street life. Marked by expressive brushwork and a bold, luminous palette, these works convey both the dynamism of the urban scene and the subtle textures of daily existence. 

Low held many solo exhibitions locally and a solo Watercolour Exhibition in Zhuhai, China. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions locally and overseas, in countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, England and France.

His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including “Artist of the Year 2010” awarded at the Ngee Ann National Teochew Artists’ Exhibition, Silver Medal at Salon des Artistes, France (1986), and National Day Art Exhibition Award (1978).​
