With a penchant for the figurative form, Syamil Dasuki bin Osman was trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), specialising in sculpture. He graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art in 2014 and was taught by Singaporean sculptor and NAFA lecturer Lim Soo Ngee. As a student, he participated in bronze casting field trips to Guangzhou, China and, in 2013, Verona Bronze Foundry, Italy. Blending his foundational skills and techniques with contemporary concepts, Syamil often experiments with different materials in his body of work.
Both cast in bronze, sculpture Pregnant and Nude were created during Syamil’s field trip to Verona Bronze Foundry in 2013. Organised by the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts at NAFA, Syamil was able to experience the traditional process of bronze casting under the guidance of Italian sculptor Anna Chiara Spellini. These sessions included various skills and techniques such as modelling, mould-making using silicon and wax, and polishing. These enriching and engaging learning experiences during the field trip significantly expanded Syamil’s vocabulary as an emerging sculptor of his generation.
