As part of NAFA’s 70th Anniversary celebration and in honour of the founding principal, Lim Hak Tai: Quintessential Nanyang was a commemorative exhibition showcasing over 50 artworks by Mr Lim Hak Tai (1893 – 1963). The exhibits came from both NAFA’s collection as well as a much appreciated loan from his son, Lim Yew Kuan for this event. The oil, acrylic and Chinese ink works, presented not just the art practice of a historical figure who had embraced the styles and techniques of both East and West, but also the aesthetic values of the Academy and the Nanyang region. The opening of the exhibition, on 4 March 2009, was held in conjunction with gallery naming, of NAFA Gallery 3 to ‘Lim Hak Tai Gallery’; and the launch of the portrait sculpture of his father by Lim Yew Kuan, located at NAFA Campus 1. Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, was the Guest-of-Honour of major event. To further mark this significant occasion, Mr. Lim Yew Kuan generously donated a couplet and an acrylic painting by Lim Hak Tai to NAFA Permanent Collection.
