Venue: Lim Hak Tai Gallery
Date Of Event: 9 December 2011 - 15 January 2012

In the second partnership with the Embassy of Mexico of the year, NAFA was honoured to host the touring exhibition Masks of Mexico from the Muyaes Ogazón Collection which was officially opened by Ms Jane Ittogi, Chair of Singapore Art Museum on 8 December 2011. Featuring a selection of 48 masks from the personal collection of Professor Estela Ogazón and Jaled Muyaes amassed during their visits to festivals from the various Mexican states; these contemporary masks celebrate the successful syncretism of paganism and Christianity in Mexico and showcased the intricate craftsmanship of their makers. Nine Tecuan collectible masks portraying the Jaguar-Tigre from Ambassador Antonio Villegas’s personal collection featured proudly amongst the exhibits, lending the variety to the exhibition. Broadly categorised by geographical region and major festivals, these masks attest to a living legacy of the rich mask tradition in Mexico.
