In commemoration of the late Pioneer artist’s unparalleled achievements and contributions to art education in Singapore, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts presented Master of Tradition and Revolution: The Artist and Teacher Chen Wen Hsi with the Chinese High School and its Alumni Association. This exhibition showcased 88 pieces of the artist’s works, which ranged from his well-known ink paintings of gibbon, squirrel and crane to lesser-seen oil paintings. The selected works, gathered from various institutions and private collectors, intended to demonstrate how Dr. Chen Wen Hsi’s safeguarding of traditions ran parallel to his artistic breakthroughs that later influenced his successors and local art history.
