The Institute of Southeast Asian Arts (ISEAA) at NAFA is presenting the exhibition on Cheong Soo Pieng, an iconic artist and teacher who was much admired and respected in his time and ours. Cheong was known to be a reserved and reticent practitioner, whose range of styles and artworks continues to provide unique avenues of discovery for art lovers and artists alike. Featuring over 50 works by the artist, this exhibition showcased an unprecedented selection of drawings, mixed media sculptural reliefs, oil paintings as well as landscapes in ink and colour of the early period. Also included were several critical pieces of Cheong’s post 1979 practice, following his return to China after settling in Malaya and then Singapore for more than 30 years. This exhibition debuted a series of abstract works hitherto unseen by scholars and the community in general.
