Ski III is an early work executed in 1974 just after Leo Hee Tong's return from Japan. It reflects a newfound understanding of colour and forms markedly different from his pre-Japan works. Leo has lived in the tropics since birth and this first encounter skiing in snow left a lasting impression, he found it important to express this experience differently and developed new techniques to convey this.
Muted winter colors, soft textures and simplified forms capture this skiing experience during a school trip to Mount Hachibuse, Hyogo. The two central figures are the artist and his instructor, both locked in movement with their heads facing forward in concentration. Behind them, are trees reduced to vertical lines, appearing to vanish into the snowy expanse as they moved forward.
This personal and introspective approach to art-making informed by experience reflects the artist’s adaptability and creativity to create new ways of making and seeing. It is also a unique moment where Singaporean artists like Leo, who actively engage with the global art scene while incorporating their Southeast Asian roots, staying true to their roots as they create their distinctive voice.
