Emerging Indonesian artist Catherin Lo was trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), specialising in printmaking under the tutelage of the Academy’s lecturer Miguel Chew. Lo graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 2011. Equipped with the knowledge, foundational skills and diverse printmaking techniques, Lo employs the woodblock to create large-scale and three-dimensional works in her oeuvre.
The installation of woodblock and printed cutouts Truth Destination debuted in OSTRALE 2011 in Dresden, Germany. It was subsequently showcased in the Single Leaf: Woodblock Printmaking exhibition at the NAFA Art Galleries in 2012. Drawing inspiration from her ethnic and cultural background, Lo utilises the traditional textiles of batik to convey this work’s cultural context and symbolic meaning. The outflowing strings of batik-like print patterns from the woodcut of an elderly lady appear to reflect the significant and diligent efforts in keeping the traditional batik alive.
