“Art is to pursue the true, the good, and the beauty. It is not for fame and wealth.”
– Mrs Lucien Wang, in an interview in 1987
Lucien Wang (1909–2007) was a famous piano teacher in Singapore who spent more than 40 years of her life teaching piano to students, grooming many of the country's talented musicians such as Ong Lip Tat, Lim Jing Jing and Benjamin Loh. As a musician who trained at the Conservatoire de Musique de Lausanne under the great pianist Alfred Cortot, she first taught music in the Singapore branch of Lingnan University and Nanyang Girls' High School. She was also a fine art student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), graduating from the sixth cohort of the Academy that was established in 1938. Her belongings and documents were donated to NAFA for the purpose of archiving and documentation after she moved into a nursing home.
