Xenomech: Enigmas Inside the Margins showcased 19 thought-provoking works by Malaysian artist Choy Chun Wei. Known for his conceptual approach to art, Choy invited viewers to explore the complexities of the human condition in this era of hyper-communications through mixed media, collages and found objects, reflecting on the state of our being.
Choy's signature large-scale collages incorporated a variety of materials, such as resin, plastics and printed texts, which together form fragmented messages that spoke of the anxieties of modern life. Get FOMO: The Trending Gesture (2024), a striking wooden panel with resin and graphic prints, and Futurist (2A-Quick Charge) (2023), a smaller yet intricate piece combining acrylic, oil, and resin with layered materials were works that embodied Choy's desire to inspire change, prompting audiences to find deeper meaning in the subtle interplay of objects and textures.
On 8 August 2024, the artist conducted a workshop with NAFA-UAS Degree students, delving into conversations on material culture, materiality and authenticity of the image. Students were encouraged to explore the relationship between objects and the self, through themes such as fragmentation and personification.
