Supachai Areerungruang (1975- )
Supachai Areerungruang is a full-time lecturer at Silpakorn University, Bangkok. He is also a visual artist, a curator and an art critic. For the past decade, he has been particularly interested in the issue of inequality within Thai society. In particular, he investigates the differences in people’s living standards around Bangkok and the disparities between the rich and the poor. These themes eventually materialise in his works, offering a contemporary perspective of his concerns.
In 2019, ‘Sound of Silence in Thailand: Drawings by Supachai Areerungruang’ was held at the Lim Hak Tai Gallery, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, his first, in Singapore. The exhibition addressed a series of political and social issues in Thailand visualised in his voice and creative expressions.
In 2022, Supachai curated a design project called Sirimahannop Tall Ship at Asiatique, Bangkok. Under the concept of a museum portal to the past, the space’s interior was embellished with artworks from the Siamese civilisation, portraying the Kingdom’s trading era a century ago. This project received the Design Excellence Award (DEmark), Thailand’s most prestigious award given in recognition of outstanding Thai-designed products.
