The second part of the double-bill exhibition, Art School SG, “This One is Dangerous” featured a refreshed line-up of large-scale site-specific installations, drawings and live performances that continue to explore the ideas of what makes an art school, offering context to the teaching and practice of art for the practitioners, educators and students.
Founding Director, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Ms Ute Meta Bauer kicked off the exhibition opening with a speech on the role of artists, students and educator, encouraging a keen reflection upon rules within an institution, and how they impact learning in the (art) school. This was followed by a riveting performance “Looking Up” 望 by the artist Tang Da Wu, who carved the Chinese character 望 on a blank canvas with a razor blade and shared with the audience his aspirations and message of hope for art. Special guest Teo Han Wue provided a short commentary on the works on display, and the event rounded off with art performances “Vincent’s Letters” an extension of his previous performance and “Save my Legs” 救我的脚 at the foyer. The final act “Rubbish is Coming” 垃圾来了, explores the stories of garbage—waste materials we often perceive as insentient and obsolete. The performances took place at the NAFA foyer on 30 October 2022 on the last day marking the close of the exhibition.
