Stalwart NAFA alumnus artist, Poon Lian held his 5th solo exhibition featuring close to 60 works from the past decade since his last solo exhibition in 2015. The exhibition opened on 25 February 2025, officiated by Mr Low Sze Wee, Group Director of Museums, National Heritage Board and member of NAFA Board.
Poon’s artistic practice offers a distinctive contribution to the ongoing dialogue between Western and Chinese artistic traditions. His approach reflected a deliberate and skillful effort to integrate core principles of both worlds: the emphasis on expressive brushwork and spiritual resonance often found in Eastern ink traditions with Western approaches to form, light, and spatial perspective. Stunning panoramas of mountains, rivers, and forests, alongside poignant observations of people in their daily lives, reveal the transformative influence of his expeditions to China, Asia and Southeast Asia, each encounter shaping his path in how he would come to articulate his understanding of the world before him.
Beyond his artistic endeavours, Poon’s dedication as an educator shone through as he engaged with visitors, students and faculty members at the exhibition in conversation about his sojourns. This included a session with art students from his alma mater Hwa Chong Institution, where he generously shared his creative process, experiences working with different mediums and diverse sources that fuel his artistic work.
