During the workshop, students were introduced to the topic of material culture and examples of material culture that are unique to the Southeast Asian context. They learnt how personal objects may be employed to communicate emotions and express personal identity. The outcome of this workshop saw students creating mixed-media sculptures as a representation of the self, made from personal artefacts, items, and found objects that they resonate and relate with.
Through conversations shared with the artists and newfound knowledge on materiality, this workshop was a platform for students to explore the relationship between objects and the self, exploring themes such as fragmentation, personification of objects and human communication.
